Matilda Minerals is committed to contributing to the sustained growth and prosperity of current and future generations of stakeholders affected by our exploration and mining operations.
Our commitment to excellence in sustainable development performance is demonstrated by our adoption of sustainability principles based upon the International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM) Sustainable Development Framework.
It is our policy to:

  • Engage with and respond to the communities in which we operate through an open consultation process;
  • Make a net positive contribution to the natural, human, social, and economic capital of the communities in which we operate;
  • Protect cultures, customs, values and human rights in dealings with those affected by our activities;
  • Assess and manage environmental impacts on a continual improvement basis;
  • Review and innovate to reduce waste through recycling and re-use of materials; to improve efficiency in the use of water and energy; promote safe handling, storage and use of materials; monitor and review the impacts of exploration and mining operations on occupational, community and environmental health;
  • Make a positive contribution to the knowledge of biodiversity in the areas in which we operate;
  • Implement, review and regularly update risk management systems;
  • Integrate sustainable development considerations within decision-making processes;
  • Seek continual improvement in our health and safety performance; and
  • Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance.

From these principles, a number of Key Performance Indicators have been developed on which Matilda Minerals will review its operations.

Matilda Minerals also recognises that the foundation of its sustainability commitment is it’s “social licence to operate" which has been earned by Matilda on the basis of building trust with the Tiwi Land Council and the communities and individuals affected by the mine development.

Our "social licence to operate" is a compliment to the regulatory approval issued by the Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments. Matilda’s Environmental Impact Statement ("EIS") for the Andranangoo Creek West and Lethbridge Bay West project received bilateral approval in July 2006.  Under this approval, Matilda is subject to a suite of environmental conditions that are currently being implemented. Compliance with these conditions will be audited on an annual basis and results reported to regulators.

Matilda is currently developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) based upon ISO14001, the international EMS standard.  The EMS will facilitate the identification and management of our environmental impacts and help us work towards continual improvement in our environmental performance.
